about

The Court Tavern is one of the most legendary New Jersey music venues of all-time. While it played host to famous bands like the Flaming Lips, Pavement, or The Gaslight Anthem, it was so much more than that. It was a place for the weirdos; the ones who didn't quite know who they were or where they belonged. It was Halfway to Halloween. It was birthday shows and wolf-shaped guitars. It was trivia nights and festivals and falling asleep in a booth and standing guard at the upstairs men's room with no lock on the door and staring your crush dead in the face from on stage. It was Brittney booking bands. It was Viking or Rhonette stamping hands, it was Ronnie, Kate, Shannon, the two Rebecca's, or Jeff behind the bar. It was conversational upstairs and REALLY loud downstairs. Most importantly, it was a family.

This particular performance was recorded on December 30, 2016. It was our last one at The Court Tavern. And as we explain at the show itself, a lot of bands played their final Court shows in the ensuing few weeks. While the Court remained open and occasionally booked shows, it was the beginning of a slow wind-down.

As of this writing (April, 2020) I don't believe it's open anymore. And that's sad. But as is the case with all families, sometimes you lose touch. Sometimes you fight. Sometimes someone moves away and sells the house. But our memories are our own. And neither anything, nor anyone can taint or take them. After all, The Court Tavern is just a building. But those moments belong to us. And I tend to look back at them with warmth and wonder.

While we definitely played better, tighter sets at The Court in our time there, this was the only full one that was recorded. We've decided to toss it out there anyway. Warts, flubs, sharps, flats, and all.

Enjoy!
